Large Mouth Hunters

This trip will take you to some of the best waters in the Northern Cape's Vaal river system  to "hunt" the elusive large mouth yellow fish. This trip will take you to places like Lillydale on the Riet River, some private stretches on the Vaal River near Kimberley and Warrenton and the untouched Taung Dam. Packaged for 4 fly fishermen this is for those that know what it takes to land the trophy of a lifetime! An experienced gilly is assigned to every 2 fisherman and boats are part of the package. If you are a competent fly fisher with a lust for adventure....

Trip schedule:

Day 1:

Arrival in Kimberley where an ON THE FLY representative will meet your group. Our first 2 nights will be spent in Lillydale rest camp on the Riet River. On arrival there will be a quick orientation and safety discussion while Lunch/brunch is served, after which we will start fishing.

Dinner will be served at a time that is comfortable for the group

Day 2:

We will spend the day on the Riet River on the Arks. The clear waters make for excellent sight fishing, and are a favourite venue of some of SA’s best yellow fish anglers.

Day 3:

Niel will take us to one of his secret spots on the Vaal. This part of the river has produced trophy large mouths on a regular basis.

Day 4:

We will travel to ON THE FLY’s base camp where we will spend the next 2 nights. The 7 km of Vaal river is home to potentially big large mouth yellows. This part of the river has not been fished for a number of years, and exploring it will be part of the adventure.

Day 5:

Early morning we will load the boats and head off to Taung dam. Not only will you get a chance to target large mouth yellows in this gin clear dam, but some dry fly fishing for trophy small mouths is also on the cards.

Day 6:

We will spend the time you have before you leave on Groenkloof, after which ON THE FLY will accompany you to Warrenton for departure.

Menu.

The menu will be discussed and finalised with you on conformation of your booking. Have a look under the cuisine section to see an example of a typical menu.

What to bring.

We will send a detailed list of necessities on conformation of the booking. It basically boils down to your fishing equipment, a sleeping bag and liquor. The rest will be supplied by ON THE FLY.

Seasons.

The best time of the year to hunt Largies is in winter, From May to September. We will be fishing from boats supplied by ON THE FLY. The nights in winter can become quite cold, and as soon as the sun comes out the days are normally quite fair, so pack accordingly.

Costs.

This trip is packaged for 4 people and sells at R4750 p.p. all inclusive. This also includes park and rod fees at Lillydale.
